Link Building

Link building is an essential method for establishing the value, creditability, trustworthiness, and search engine ranking of your website.

There are essentially two ways to build links. One method involves an agreement to exchange links. In other words, you place a link from your website to another website in exchange for your link being on that site.

The second method involves no agreement to exchange links. You receive incoming (one-way, inbound) links because the content of your website is of value to others. You provide information that they want to share with their readers. Therefore, they are willing to provide a link to your site without requesting that you do the same.

Likewise, you will also link (one-way) to other websites because the information they provide is good for your readers.

One-way, incoming links are also referred to as backlinks.

Link building allows you to give your readers more of the information they seek. Always keep in mind that people want to fulfill a need, solve a problem, satisfy a desire, or have a question answered. Your readers need information to accomplish their task.

Therefore, you do not want to link to just any website. You will want to exchange links, and link only to those sites, that complement your website content.

Search engine algorithms include links as one off-page factor in determining your page rank. You may hurt your ranking if you link to (or exchange links with) bad websites.

Of course, you have no control over one-way, inbound links. In which event, it is not likely that search engines will penalize your site for inbound links from bad websites. However, it is good business practice to keep track of all inbound, outbound, and exchange links.

A successful home business website involves a good, manageable link-building program.
