Information Overload?

Develop Your Unique Voice

Think of your unique voice as your "writing tone" and the approach you use to communicate content to readers. You develop and use your unique voice to find a niche for the information you share.

PS: Stop here if you have not read your copy of the free e-book Make Your Content PREsell. Please reconsider!

The book is a necessary part of establishing a solid foundation before you start to build a website. It will help you to bring into focus your communication approach.

If you have not done so, subscribe to The Follow Me Project. You'll get the link to download your free copy of MYCPS.

You will also get a lot of supplemental information so that you can actually start the website building process.

Foremost, you are providing website content to solve a problem, fulfill a need, or satisfy a desire.

Your unique voice carries your message in a consistent way throughout each web page.

For some, a writing tone may mean using humor in order to communicate their message. For others, it may mean using the experience factor. You know, the "I've been there, done that, did this" factor.

Using a voice of authority is another tone that some may use to convey their message. Use the writing tone that best fit your personality, or what you are most comfortable doing. In other words, just be yourself!

Do not get hung up on thinking that you do not have a writing tone that will influence others. Keep in mind that tens of millions of people surf the internet. You are not trying to "win over" everyone.

Out of millions, you only need to identify a small number of surfers for your niche. Perhaps you will only need one or two thousand readers to create a profitable website.

Provide relevant content and you will get your share of loyal readers.

The Approach For Your Unique Voice

When you think about how you want to convey your message, picture yourself talking to one person. This one person will represent the niche market you want to reach.

Now, consider how you want to communicate your message to this one representative person. You may want to convey your message as a friend, mentor, teacher, neighbor, fellow citizen, or someone else.

  • Using the concept of friend seems to work best for owners of a home based business website. It is also the easiest method to use.

We are already comfortable talking to friends. In fact, we have years of experience using our unique voice to talk to friends across the yard fence, living room or kitchen table.

  • If you use the concept of teacher or instructor, take care not to talk "over the head" of your reader. In other words, that one person you want to sway.

Equally bad is to talk down to him or her. You will get a click away from you site faster than you can say I can help you.

  • Pretending to share a secret, or little known information, with a neighbor may work just as well for you.

Again, use the concept of "one". Think of a neighbor as that one person you want to give how to information to solve a problem.

  • Similar to a neighbor, a fellow citizen may also learn from your "how to" knowledge.

There are always those that can benefit from your experiences, whether good or bad.

In conclusion...

Use your unique voice and approach to provide a consistent message throughout the content on your website.

Picture yourself speaking to one person, and one person only. You are not writing a novel. You are not trying to write like an expert.

Write for that "one" person, only.

You are writing to share information you have that can solve a problem, satisfy a desire, or fulfill a need.

At this stage, do not worry about grammar, grammar and style, or other writing concerns. You’ll get plenty of help in other sections of this website.
